On June 7, 2016, the Legislative Assembly approved the new Law for the “STRENGTHENING OF THE COSTA RICAN INSTITUTE OF RAILWAYS (INCOFER) AND PROMOTION OF THE INTER-URBAN ELECTRIC TRAIN OF THE GREAT METROPOLITAN AREA”.
The electric passenger trains will offer to its users a public transport option modern, comfortable, safe, efficient and environmentally responsible. It will connect 15 cities of the Greater Metropolitan Area of the 4 most populated provinces of the country, and its journey it will be two-way about 84 kilometers in the current right of way. The electric train will provide service for 18 hours a day and 7 days a week. Besides, it will have a capacity of 600 people per train.
The Central American Bank for Economic Integration will (BCIE) support a loan of $550 million to the Government of the Republic of Costa Rica for the construction, equipment, and commissioning of the electric train of the Greater Metropolitan Area (GAM). The loan will have a term of 25 years.
